Oboe concertos were greatly popular during the Baroque and Classical eras, crisp and athletic in style. But during the 19th century, writing for the instrument became increasingly Romantic, both in the concert hall and in the opera house. Its pastoral character was enriched: “tender” and “shy”, according to Berlioz. By the mid-20th century its timbre had been expanded further. The increased complexity of the writing is immediately apparent in Richard Strauss’s expansive four-movement work (1945), with the textures still warmly lyrical but the melodic flow of allegros much more prolix, with a vivacious wit in the Scherzo and the finale offset by the gorgeous Andante which has a rich cantabile line, almost folk-like, and vocal in feeling. It is most beautifully played here.

Zimmermann’s Concerto (1952; subtitled “Homage to Stravinsky”) is based on an unformidable 12-tone sequence, and in the first movement quotes motifs from that same composer’s Symphony in C. It opens gawkily, rhythmically and concisely, with pointed timbre, then in a central Rhapsodie (Sostenuto molto) becomes more improvisational, using (tuned) percussive effects to create a weird, often haunting will-o’-the-wisp atmosphere. The virtuoso finale (with a bravura cadenza) again recalls its dedicatee and the ear is tickled by the free rhythmic style and the light-hearted invention.

In many ways Martinu’s Concerto (1955) is melodically the most richly expansive of the three. Its almost voluptuously lyrical opening movement immediately demonstrates the folksy undertones of the appealing melodic invention, with the vitality of the rhythmic tuttis sharpened by an important piano contribution. The slow movement is deeply touching, with an eloquent horn solo to introduce the soloist. But it is above all a happy work and the cadenzas of the Vivace finale make a virtuoso topping to the exuberant climax.

All three works are superbly played here by the brilliantly nimble Stefan Schilli, and Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian orchestra give him vivid support. I cannot think of a more enticing triptych of modern oboe concertos from any other source. ~Grammophone
