Henk Badings' third symphony, a work premiered by the world-famous Willem Mengelberg in 1935, in particular merits mention. Karl Böhm conducted this work with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, and it subsequently became what was certainly his most-performed symphony – a high point in his young career. The composer himself pointed to the fact that the polytonal harmony of this symphony is to be explained by the presence of various tonal centers in the contrapuntal texture of the voices. The conductor Jan Epenhuysen declared with respect to this work: »My surprise and admiration for the contrapuntal work in this symphony know no bounds.«
