As in his other Beethoven interpretations, Beecham treats the Pastoral Symphony as far more than an evocative programme-piece. He tends to prefer steady speeds. The result is wonderfully fresh as well as elegant, with an exuberant reading of the finale at a fast-flowing tempo. No.8 is comparably brisk and buoyant in the outer movements, relaxed in the middle movements, with the second-movement Allegretto winningly sprung. transfers of the mono 1951-2 recordings bring commendably clean textures with good inner detail.
