An irresistible, elementary force emanates from the eleven pieces of the Music Ricercata composed in 1951-1953. Even Stanley Kubrick could not resist this fascination and made the second piece the central element of the soundtrack of his last film Eyes Wide Shut. The early piano work of the famous Hungarian György Ligeti was the result of experiments with minimalist structures of rhythm and sound "in order to construct a New Music from nothing", as Ligeti once said himself. The first piece uses only one tone to which another tone is added at the end; the music of the second piece consists of three tones, the third piece of four tones, the eleventh piece of twelve tones.
