The most striking success of all among the current batch of CfP reissues is a triptych of the three popular Kodaly orchestral works, the Hary Janos suite and the Dances of Galanta and Marosszek, brilliantly played by the LPO and conducted with flair and remarkable idiomatic feeling by that fine but underrated conductor, Walter Susskind. The LPO rise to the occasion, and there is much superb solo playing, as at the opening of Galanta from the principal horn, who is followed by the warmly resilient violins and a luscious contribution from the solo clarinet. This work seems to be closing atmospherically, but then Susskind produces a splendidly natural surge of adrenalin. What makes these performances doubly appealing is the superb recording quality, which with its brilliance, body and wonderful depth of perspective, bears comparison with Dutoit's Decca digital disc (4/96). The important cimbalom contribution to Hary Janos, incidentally, is expertly balanced. The recording made in the Kingsway Hall, was produced by Brian Culverhouse, and recorded by Kenneth Wilkinson. It is difficult to believe that its date is as early as 1977: countless discs made much more recently do not sound as realistic (or as thrillingly immediate) as this one does (EMI Classics for Pleasure ® CD CD-CFP6029: 59 minutes: ADD).
