Sinopoli's interpretations of these two Strauss tone-poems are magnificent and are recorded with clarity. The balance is not in any way eccentric—I say this because some of DG's recent Karajan/ Strauss recordings have been very oddly balanced—and the quality of the sound, even in the fiercest climaxes, is never distorted nor saturated. This conductor does not enjoy a good press in Britain, some reviews of his concerts almost suggesting incompetence. Speak as one finds: all I can say is that I thought I knew these works very well, but I learned something new about them from these performances.
What I find most impressive is the way Sioopoli approaches a score as if it were a brand-new document waiting to be brought to life for the first time. Thus, in Zarathustra one is taken aback by the modernity of the music and its precisely calculated brilliance of orchestration. How amazing it must have sounded in 1896. Sinopoli does not rob Strauss of any of his richness, but he shows us the score's angularities as well as its luxuriance, its grit as well as its sweetness. That this is going to be a tempestuous performance is obvious from the ferociously beating drums in the famous opening.
His care for accuracy and for good balance pays special dividends in the Wissenscha't episode, often—even in Karajan's noble performance—a section of the score where Strauss seems to have miscalculated or lost interest because of its academic subject-matter. Sinopoli makes it fascinating, with every interweaving strand of the strings clearly delineated. The cellos have a lot to do in this work and how beautifully the NYPO instrumentalists play. Again, Sinopoli takes immense trouble to obtain the exact blending and colour of chords, so the start of the Ziemlich langsam (bar 338) is a revelatory moment in this recording. The flute melody in Tod und Verklärung is set against a supremely delicate orchestral background, with Strauss's scoring faithfully respected for its integrity. The climax of this tone-poem is no less ecstatic, if a trifle less exalting, than under Karajan. - M. K. Gramophone
