Anna Netrebko - Souvenirs [Deutsche Grammophon 477 7638] {Germany 2008} (Repost)

“This recording is like a bridal bouquet, bursting with variety and colours", says Anna Netrebko. “I want it to create a wonderful array of emotions - passion, fun, love, tenderness."

Anna Netrebko lets her hair down. On this, her fourth solo album for Deutsche Grammophon, she gives full rein to her lively sense of fun, glamour and joie de vivre. In the tradition of such opera luminaries as Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Joan Sutherland and Plácido Domingo, all of whom produced acclaimed recitals of lighter music, Anna has put together this sparkling compilation of operetta classics, seductive salon songs and other charming melodies. Souvenirs is also the singer's most intimate recording yet, for - as the title suggests - each of the tracks holds a cherished place in Anna's heart, and many of them come with a special memory.

Take Kálmán's Heia, in den Bergen, a brilliant number full of wild mountain calls and open-throated Magyar passion. This show-stopper comes from Die Csárdásfürstin (The Gypsy Princess), the first operetta Anna ever saw as a child in her south Russian home-town of Krasnodar. The thrill of that occasion inspired her with a love for the glamour of operetta, and she started lessons with the aim of becoming a singer of light music. It was only when she went to study in St. Petersburg that she also succumbed to the lure of opera.

The first piece that the 15-year-old Anna Netrebko learned as a student was Solveig's Song from Grieg's Peer Gynt. Back then, of course, she sang it in Russian. Now she performs this touching piece - the deserted Solveig is solemnly awaiting the return of her long-lost lover Peer - in Norwegian, just one of nine languages in this recording (or ten, if we count the notoriously difficult dialect of Andalusia separately from Spanish). Anna, who loves languages as well as a challenge, also sings here in French, Italian, German, Russian, Czech, Yiddish and Latin.

Her fascination with languages is but one facet of Anna's personality showcased in this collection. In terms of emotional range, she travels from the bittersweet longing of Lehár's Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiss - which the soprano calls her signature tune - via the breathless poise of Strauss's Cäcilie, to the frothy high spirits and fireworks of Arditi's coloratura roof-raiser Il bacio (The Kiss).

Anna Netrebko has a firm and unerring instinct about which pieces suit her best, and a particularly happy souvenir that she took away from the studio was Strauss's Wiegenlied. This lullaby lies within her creamiest vocal register, and she has performed it many times in recital with piano. Here she drew on those years of experience and recorded it in just one happy take.

As in her Russian Album, Anna again takes great delight in introducing her international audience to some pearls from her native repertoire: “The two Rimsky-Korsakov songs are incredibly popular in Russia, but they only exist with piano accompaniment. To record them for this album, we had to commission arrangements. It was very important for me that the orchestrations be light and transparent, almost like a good perfume adorning these beautiful but simple melodies - one of them with a delicate oriental fragrance." Working on the arrangements in the studio with the conductor and recording team was a new and rewarding experience for Anna: “You're actually helping create a new sound, not only with your own voice but in collaboration with everyone. That was fantastic!"

She also includes a religious piece. The Pie Jesu from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem holds a particularly dear place in Anna's heart. When she performed it as a young singer in St. Petersburg (having insisted on programming it as soon as she first heard it), the noisily enthusiastic audience demanded an encore. Anna has enjoyed this warm response from her public many times since then, but the first shout of “bis!" (Russians use the same word as the French, Spanish and Italians) is still imprinted on her memory.

Lloyd Webber's Pie Jesu is a duet (performed here with the English treble Andrew Swait), and this is another aspect of Anna's art which she wishes to emphasize in this highly personal collection: her joy in collaborating. Featured here are several duets, including the famous Barcarolle from Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, sung with her friend, the Latvian mezzo-soprano Elina Garacna. There is also the seductive “Im Chambre séparée" from Heuberger's operetta Der Opernball (The Opera Ball), which she sings with Polish tenor Piotr Beczala. Frequently now adapted as a solo, this duet was actually written for soprano and mezzo en travesti, but following in the footsteps of such artists as Rita Streich and Peter Anders, or Grit van Jüten and René Kollo, she performs it here with a male partner.

One of Anna's concerns was to make this recording as well-balanced as a good meal. She was keen that the main course of operetta should be followed by a luxurious dessert (these are the richer, slower, creamier pieces), and then, to finish, there should be a lively champagne digestif. Arditi's Il bacio is surely as close to champagne as music can get.

The singer is particularly keen to pay tribute to her conductor, Emmanuel Villaume. She has frequently worked before with the French maestro in concert, and is fulsome in her praise of his skill and sensitivity. “On every track he asked me to give even more energy!" she says. “I adore that. I love to be pushed and challenged. He's really one of the most helpful musicians I've worked with. I loved how he got Elina and me to sing the Barcarolle with such expression, with what he called 'tremors of pleasure'."

She also loved the idea of singing Dvorák at the magnificent Rudolfinum in Prague, one of the world's most musical as well as most beautiful cities. On recording the Czech composer's famous Songs My Mother Taught Me in both of its “original" languages, Anna found it “quite amazing how the character and the whole expression of the piece changes when you go from German to Czech". At first she was going to do it only in German, but the orchestra loved hearing Anna sing in their mother tongue. As she relates: “The fact that we decided to include the Czech version on this album is a tribute to the musicians. I love the Prague Philharmonia. They're such a wonderful young orchestra, so lively and fresh, so committed and energetic."

She might, of course, be describing herself. But the singer's disarming way of poking fun at herself is perhaps the one quality that she doesn't bring to this otherwise revealing musical self-portrait.
