Johann Gottlieb Graun became a member of the small court orchestra of the Prussian Crown Prince Frederick in Ruppin in 1732, which Carl Heinrich also joined in 1735. With Friedrich's ascension to the throne in 1740, Johann Gottlieb was appointed concertmaster and Carl Heinrich kapellmeister of the royal court. Johann Gottlieb remained until the end of his life closely linked to Frederick the Great, as concertmaster and chamber musician. Whilst his brother Carl Heinrich became an important figure at the new Berlin Court Opera, Johann Gottlieb strongly influenced the musical life of Berlin and early classicism in general as a violinist and composer.

One can no longer determine with any certainty which of the brothers wrote the oboe concertos recorded here – the existing sources are too unclear and the differences in their personal styles are too slight. What is certain, however, is that the name "Graun" was a kind of seal of approval in those days for zestful music rich in ideas – an estimation still valid today, as is readily apparent when listening to these concertos.

The oboist Xenia Löffler has distinguished herself as a specialist for the North German repertoire of this period, as in her recordings with oboe concertos from the Dresden Court and with works from the Dresden Pisendel Collection (ACC24202 and 24222). Alongside her teaching activities at the Academy of the Arts in Bremen, she is a member of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and in great international demand as a soloist.

Reviews: According to Leonard Bernstein, “BACH” is “a colossal syllable” that “makes composers tremble” and “brings performers to their knees.” Musicologists may have an equivalent reaction to “GRAUN.” When the Graun brothers, Johann Gottlieb (1703–1771) and Carl Heinrich (1704–1759), worked side-by-side in the court of crown prince Friedrich of Prussia, J. G. as concertmaster and C. H. as Kappellmeister, both composed regularly, but neither thought to claim authorship for individual scores written during their joint tenure there. Nor did their copyists make the distinction, probably assuming that the musicians they served knew who wrote what. So posterity is left with a pile of papers, all marked “Graun,” but no more. The brothers had similar traits, but even had they not, we have no way of saying which was which. Compounding the issue is the fact that the name “Graun” was well enough respected that it turned up on many scores by lesser composers hoping to capitalize on its appeal—much like the names of Pergolesi and Haydn in later years.

As if to prove the latter assertion, Accent begins the disc with works by Johann Christoph Friedrich Förster (1693–1745) and Johann Baptist Georg Neruda (c. 1711–1776), both of which were once attributed to the Grauns. As for the earlier conundrum, Accent does not even try to assess authorship for the remaining pieces, prudently attributing them to “J. G. or C. H. Graun”—hence the ambiguous headnote above. Not that it matters. All are further evidence that there exists vast body of music worthy hearing that was not written by “The Great Composers.”

The disc’s title, Oboe Concertos , is slightly misleading. There are four oboe concertos on the program, alternating with pieces in which the oboe does not appear: a sinfonia, a quartet of strings with continuo, and a trio sonata. All are expertly realized by the members of the Batzdorfer Hofkapelle, a small ensemble that derives its name from a medieval knight’s castle near Dresden and specializes in Baroque repertory. But the main attractions are the oboe (and oboe d’amore), and oboist Xenia Löffler. Löffler, an occasional soloist in John Eliot Gardiner’s Bach Cantata Pilgrimage, is currently principal oboist of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and knows the idiom thoroughly. She sails through these concertos with seemingly effortless abandon. This is a most enjoyable disc, which is heartily recommended.

Lest you conclude from this review that the Graun brothers were interchangeable, they were not. Johann Gottlieb was primarily a violinist who wrote mainly instrumental and orchestral music (such as the contents of this disc). Carl Heinrich was a singer, highly regarded in his time and better known as a composer of operas, for the court of Dresden before his engagement with Friedrich, and later for the royal court in Berlin. And here’s a tidbit for your next cocktail party: C. H. Graun’s great-great-great-great grandson was the novelist Vladimir Nabokov (from Wikipedia, where else?). I kid you not.
