Roman Haubenstock-Ramati (27 February, 1919, in Kraków – 3 March, 1994, in Vienna) was a composer and music editor who worked in Kraków, Tel Aviv and Vienna…

Haubenstock-Ramati studied composition, music theory, violin and philosophy in Kraków and Lemberg from 1937 to 1940. Among his teachers were Artur Malawski and Józef Koffler. From 1947 to 1950 he was head of the music department of Kraków Radio. From 1950 he was a professor at the Tel Aviv Music Academy, where he also led the setting-up of a central music library. In 1957 he was awarded a six-month stipend for the Academy for Musique Concrète. From 1958 he was an editor of new music for Universal Edition in Vienna. In addition he gave guest lectures and composition seminars in Tel Aviv, Stockholm, Darmstadt, Bilthoven (the Netherlands) and Buenos Aires, and from 1973 held a professorship at the Musikhochschule in Vienna.

Haubenstock-Ramati was also a designer and painter.

Born in Reggio Calabria, Giovanna Reitano studied harp with Guglielmina Spiaggia at the ‘G. Verdi’ Conservatorio di Musica (‘G. Verdi’ Music Academy) in Milano and with Ursula Holliger at the Musikhochschule (University of Music) in Freiburg, Germany, where she completed a Bachelor (Honours) Degree in Harp and a Master’s Degree in Music Performance respectively. Giovanna also took Masterclasses with Giuliana Albisetti at the same ‘G.Verdi’ Conservatorio in Milano and with Pierre Jamet at the Academie of Gargilesse in France. In 1989 Giovanna Reitano received an award at the National Harp Competition at Savigliano, Italy.

Since her early age Giovanna Reitano has been performing both as a solo harpist and as a member of several international chamber ensembles and orchestras. She has a wide and varied repertoire which includes works of all styles in musical literature, with a strong bias towards contemporary pieces. She has collaborated with orchestras such as the Radio Symphony Orchestra (RAI) in Milan, Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Basel Theatre Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of Freiburg, Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, Granada Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquesta Nacional de España, Orquesta de la Radio Televison Española and Prague Symphony Orchestra.

Giovanna Reitano played under the direction of conductors such as Stefan Asbury, Sylvain Cambreling, Friedrich Cerha, Peter Eötvös, Johannes Kalitzke, Pascal Rophé, Peter Rundel, Roberto Paternostro, Ingo Metzmacher, Donald C. Runnicles, Arturo Tamayo, Hans Zender and Jürg Wittenbach.

Besides, she has collaborated with composers like Luciano Berio, Sylvano Bussotti, Friedrich Cerha, José Luis de Delás, Franco Donatoni, Beat Furrer, Georg Friedrich Haas, Toshio Hosokawa, Klaus Huber, Georgy Kurtag, Hans Peter Kyburz, Robert HP Platz, Philippe Manoury, Matthias Pintscher and Wolfgang Rihm. As a soloist, Giovanna Reitano worked especially with Luciano Berio, Sylvano Bussotti, José Luis de Delás, Luis de Pablo and Klaus Huber. The composer Luis De Pablo has dedicates to her a concert for Harp and Orchestra, 'Danzas Segretas'.

Giovanna Reitano has performed at many festivals, such as the Luzerner Festspiele, Salzburg Festival, Bregenzer Festspiele, Festival Internacional de Música de Alicante, Wien Modern, Hörgänge Wien, Musikprotokoll Graz, Musik der Zeit WDR Köln, Musik Biennale Berlin, Wittener Musiktagen, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Ars Musica Brussel, IGNM Festival Luxembourg, etc.

As a soloist, Giovanna Reitano has performed at the Salzburg Festival, Radiokulturhaus (ORF) in Vienna, IGNM Luxembourg Festival, International Music Festival of Alicante, ARCO Festival, Smetana Saal of Prague, Salamanca European Culture City 2002, Auditorium Manuel De Falla in Granada, Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, amongst other festivals and concert halls.

Giovanna Reitano was the Solo Harpist and member of the Basel Sinfonietta Orchestra and the chamber ensemble Concertino Basel in Basel, Switzerland; Solo harpist of the Württemberg Philharmonic Orchestra in Reutlingen, Germany; Solo harpist and member of the Austrian Ensemble for Contemporary Music ‘Klangforum Wien’ in Vienna, as well as a member and lecturer of the Academia de Música Contemporánea (Contemporary Music Academy) of the CDMC (Centre for the Promotion of Contemporary Music of the Spanish Ministry of Culture) in Madrid. Giovanna Reitano works as a freelance performer.

As a stage performer and harpist Giovanna Reitano took part at the Music-Theatre Productions ‘La passion Selon Sade’ by Sylvano Bussotti, directed by Sylvano Bussotti (Spanish Premiere) at the Teatro La Zarzuela in Madrid, and 'In vain oder Reproduktion verboten' (from Edgar Allan Poe und René Magritte) by Johannes Harneit, directed by Anna Viebrock at the Schauspielhaus Zürich, Switzerland.

Giovanna Reitano was the soloist of the world Premiere of ‘Cathédrale II’ (for Harp and Tape) by Roman Haubenstock-Ramati in Vienna, Austria; the European Premiere of ‘Returning’ by Toshio Hosokawa with the Orquesta Nacional de España; the Spanish Premier of Witold Lutoslawski's ‘Double Concerto’ with the Orquesta Clásica de Madrid and Boulez' s ‘Sur incise’ with the Ensemble de la Academia de Música Contemporánea of CDMC; the Luxembourg Premiere of Klaus Huber’s ‘James Joyce Chamber Music’ with the Luxemboug Philarmonic Orchestra; the Spanish and Czech Premiere of ‘Chemins I’ by Luciano Berio with the Orquesta de la Radiotelevisión Española and the Prague Symphony Orchestra.

Giovanna Reitano has recorded Ensemble and Solo music for the labels Col Legno (Germany), Kairos (Austria), Timpani (France), Stradivarius and Fremus (Italy). Her recordings of Roman Haubenstock-Ramati, Sylvano Bussotti and Klaus Huber’s works for Harp gained respectively the Pasticcio Price (ORF1) Austria, the 5 Stars Classic Voice, the 5 Stars All Music magazine (USA) and the 4 Stars Selection Musicora recognitions.

The Radio Stations Radio Clásica (RTVE España), ORF 1 of Vienna, Radio Berlin Brandenburg (RBB), Radio 100.7 of Luxembourg, Bayern 4 Klassik, Rádio e Televisáo de Portugal, Concertzender Neederland, Radio Galére Marseille have dedicated programs to her recordings.
