Rather than play any single complete suite (of the three) that Prokofiev extracted from the complete ballet, Myung-Whun Chung makes his own selection of numbers, roughly following the plot line and including music representative of all the major characters. Although some other collections offer more music, this hour of Romeo and Juliet makes a satisfying presentation on its own. What makes the performance special is the spectacular playing of the Dutch orchestra. Frankly, it's never been done better. From the whiplash virtuosity of the violins to the bite of the trombones and the firm thud of the bass drum, this is the sound the composer must have dreamed of.

Review by David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com

Chung offers the first two orchestral suites (1936), closing with ‘Juliet’s Death’ from the third (1946). Tjeknavorian offers all three in sequence – 20 movements in total, adding up to nearly 15 minutes of extra music. Chung’s approach balances the balletically evocative with the symphonically abstract. Cumulatively, his is an enormously impressive performance. He knows just how to coax a melody to sing, how to let the span of music breathe. Less tensioned, less in love with beauty, Tjeknavorian is more matter-of-fact. Wanting in drama and poetry, his penchant for occasionally excessive speed or short-winded phrasing trivialises, even vulgarises, Prokofiev’s ideas. His orchestra isn’t in the class of the Dutch. And his acoustically unexciting, closely engineered sound cannot begin to compare with the space, resonance or physical gravity of the DG.

Mark Ermler’s new complete version of the ballet score has all the distinguishing features of his ROH Tchaikovsky cycle. Here is playing of natural fluency and eloquent theatricality, musically felt and expressively sensitive despite tempi in the famous set pieces often being faster than either Tjeknavorian or Chung. Maybe the 15 hammer-blows of ‘Tybalt’s Death’ lack the sheer physical terror of Chung’s characterisation – much else doesn’t, however.

Review by Ates Orga, BBC Music Magazine

I'll get my only real bugbear out of the way first. Myung-Whun Chung's selection offers us Prokofiev's first two suites in their entirety (Suite No. 1 is programmed as a sequence from track 3 through to track 9) plus the final number from the Third Suite (''Death of Juliet''). However, both Jarvi and Jordan manage to fit all three suites on to a single CD, and those admirable selections from Dutoit and Pesek also each clock in at something over 70 minutes: such is the superior quality of the music-making on this new survey, I only wish DG could have given us a few extra minutes for our pennies.

That over, I have to say I derived considerable pleasure from Chung's sensitive, keen-eared direction. Detail is copiously and always affectionately brought out, yet at no time is one's attention drawn away from Prokofiev's marvellous inspiration. Faster numbers such as the ''Folk Dance'' (First Suite, No. 1) and ''Dance'' (Second Suite, No. 4) possess fine spring and snap, and the superbly delicate string articulation in ''Juliet as a young girl'' (Second Suite, No. 2—a most engagingly tender portrait) is a real treat. Indeed, as you would expect from this great orchestra, the playing throughout displays marvellous finesse and appealing character: try the brief ''Scene'' (First Suite, No. 2) or ''Friar Laurence'' (Second Suite, No. 3), both of which are distinguished by superb solo bassoon work, or the lazily seductive sway of the ''Dance of the girls with lilies'' (Second Suite, No. 6).

Where Chung really scores is in Juliet's funeral music, where the bite and purity of his supremely eloquent strings are a thing of wonder. Nor does Chung miss out on the full tragic dimensions of this heart-rending sequence the way that Dutoit for one certainly does; the ensuing ''Death of Juliet'' (Third Suite, No. 6), too, is extremely moving. Only the magnificent concluding cortege in the ''Death of Tybalt'' (First Suite, No. 7) is lacking something in absolute rhythmical security and blazing intensity (both Ancerl and Pesek are especially memorable here)—a pity, in view of the terrifically exciting fight-music leading up to it (how good it is to hear Chung's cellos and basses really tucking into their accents during these bars).
The 4D recording is impressive on the whole, if just a touch inconsistent. In any quieter music the Concertgebouw acoustic lends a ravishing glow to proceedings—sample the gorgeous string timbre at the start of ''Madrigal'' (First Suite, No. 3); tuttis, on the other hand, occasionally acquire a fierceness and (as at the end of the ''Death of Tybalt'') an unexpected cloudiness. Bass-drum fanciers, though, have been spectacularly well catered for. Most enjoyable.'
