Carmignola’s fiery and successful “Vivaldi con moto” is followed by a more subtle and traditional Bach Concerto recording, a Co-Production between Deutsche Grammophon and Deutschlandfunk. Carmignola and Concerto Koln bring new and outstanding colors into this often recorded repertoire, and their temperamental performance introduces a sparkling and thrilling interpretation of Bach’s concertos. Carmignola is a unique artist and one of today’s most charismatic and captivating violinists, prompting The Strad to say “Timing is everything, and Carmignola has the timing of Sinatra. Rubato, portamento, pauses, tight-rope showmanship.” For the Double Concerto, Carmignola is joined by Mayumi Hirasaki on the first violin.

Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
Performer: Giuliano Carmignola, Mayumi Hirasaki
Orchestra/Ensemble: Concerto Cologne

Reviews: Carmignola describes in the booklet the influence of baroque Italian composers on Bach, foremost Vivaldi (see the organ concertos for example) but also others (Locatelli etc.). So, it comes as no surprise that Carmignola sheds a new light on Bach and adds an Venetian flair and lightness to the many recordings of this opus (and rarely heard reconstructions of two other concertos), bringing (or even returning?) even more lightness and mediterranean light to Bach. In some parts you almost can hear the Italian sun shining and feel the flicker of the hot air. It is true Bach i.m.o., and the playing ist top notch, both from soloists and orchestra, as expected. This is an exciting recording that deserves attention, even if you already have one or more other interpretations of these on the shelf (physically or digitally). If you like your baroque music light and exciting this is the recording for you. Highly recommended!
