As we know from a confessional letter, the so-called "Heiligenstadt Testament", Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) went through a period of deep crisis, afterwards finding his way to enormous creative power. This phenomenal creative period is documented not only by famous revolutionary compositions such as the "Eroica" Symphony and the 5th Symphony, - at this very time Beethoven also composed the profoundly lyrical 4th Symphony, the 4th Piano Concerto and the Violin Concerto. The both expressive and motivic relationship of the last two works and their mutual character, full of intimacy and a yearning for love and happiness, are so striking that they have been brought into connection with Beethoven's love-letters to Josephine Deym. This outburst of feelings is most explicitly expressed in the unusual form and the intense emotion of the Violin Concerto in D major, which was written in 1806. Beethoven was always more concerned with the intentions of a work rather than with formal principles, a fact which is easily recognizable in the innovative conception of the Violin Concerto which takes on the form of a weighty symphonic work. The first movement of the Concerto gives the essence of the composition which is written in a masterfully developed sonata form with a double exposition. What is intended to be expressed is shown by the fact that both themes are gentle, songlike and lyrical to the core. The only really dramatic element is the four-bar-long motive from the transition; the fateful atmosphere is further evoked by the ever-present four-tone figure on the trombones. The violin however does not partake in this rather robust element and toys with the main theme, varying it gently The coda is fascinating. Here, the soloist takes up a secondary theme on the lower strings and soars up to breathless heights. The romantic magic of the Larghetto with its famous variations and the enrapturing cantilena of the elegiac episode further emphasize the lyrical mood of the work. The radiant final Rondo with its popular rhythmic main theme comes over as an outburst of joy. The solo violin then takes command and is given the opportunity to shine not only with the main theme but also in fascinating variation passages. The two Romances for Violin and Orchestra in G major and F major anticipate the musical world of the violin concerto thanks to their lyrical mood, intimate melody and sensitive beauty, and are forerunners of romantic concertante works. The interpreter is the Czech violinist Josef Suk (1929). Having completed his studies in Prague, he devoted himself to both chamber music and solo performances. Among his repertoire Suk includes works not only by Dvorak, Suk and Beethoven but also by Berg, Janacek and Martinu. The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom Suk appeared as a soloist for many years, performs here under the direction of the conductor Franz Konwitschny (1901-1962). Konwitschny first began his musical career as a violinist and viola player; he took up the baton succesfully for the first time in 1927. In 1949 he was made Director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and later took up the post of Principal Conductor at both the Dresden and Berlin Operas. Milos Navratil
