In the late 1960’s there was a political, social and cultural effervescence in the world. Some examples: in France the student movement of 1968; in Czechoslovakia the "Prague Spring"; China's "Cultural Revolution" ; in the USA the protest against the war in Viet-Nam, and many more.

In Brazil, who lived at that time under a strong military dictatorship, the effervescence occurred by the student movement and more intense cultural event happening was in popular music, always looking for ways to circumvent the censorship imposed by dictators.

In this way the movement "Tropicalista" (Tropicalism) has blossomed, anarchist by nature, but rescuing historical works and artists, some of them forgotten by the local "intelligentsia", who idolized the "bossa-nova".

The movement more prominent herald was Caetano Veloso, who co-adjuvanted by Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Tom Zé, Rogério Duprat, Gal Costa and others, made the fusion of Brazilian music, which already has many varieties, with international influences, ranging from rock to fado, tango to "chanson française" and even a flirtation with the opera.

Some hastily judged to have a break from the bossa-nova, but to combat them, Caetano and "Tropicalistas" worshiped the masters of "bossa-nova": João Gilberto and Tom Jobim. It was the “geléia geral” ("general jelly" ) !!!

This disc, from 1969, in his minimalist art graphics (a clear reference to the BEATLES: "White Album"), is intense and musically diverse, going through all the styles mentioned above and therefore, forty years after its launch, still causes “frisson” ("buzz") and is considered one of the best albums of Caetano.
