Back in the summer of ‘78 someone told me that there was one hell of a harp player blowing hot and cold up and down the boulevards of Paris. “You can‘t miss hirn. He wears a floppy beret and when he takes it off he has all of his hair…his name is Andy and he‘s just arrived from the States“. Julio Finn had skipped town in a haze of Havana smoke and 1 was looking tor someone to put a harp track I was producing for an album that featured the current crop of American and British musicians hanging out in Paris. lt didn‘t take long to track Andy down and get him in front of a microphone tor, as 1 learned much later, his first taste of the recording process. He blew a stunning solo, first take. Later he told me he was real nervous and the notes were bending themselves without effort on his part. He‘s been in front of a lot of microphones and audiences since then and his playing just keeps getting better and these days the notes bend like they‘re Romanian gymnasts.
I recently got to hang out with Andy in his home town of New Orleans where I heard these tracks before they were mixed and if ever an album sounded in the pocket straight out of the board it‘s this one, bis 14 th album in 22 years of making uplifting music and in my opinion bis best 10 date.When he wasn‘t playing we‘d drive around in bis white whale of a Lincoln with a couple of go-cups lodged between the dash and the windshield cruising between shows at places like Vaughn‘s, Tipitina‘s, The House of Blues or Funky Bull‘s. Being with Andy meant there was always a royal welcome whereuer we went. Inside these legendary venues I had the privilege of hearing and meeting the musicians who play on this recording. These are top sidemen who when they are not out on the road working with the likes of Dr. lohn, Marva Wright, or Glarence “Gatewouth“ Brown can be found sitting in at each others local gigsand playing witb great spirit, generosity aed humor. lt‘s a stellar crew who worked on this album and no mean task to get them all together. If anynno could do it though it‘s Andy because the quality of the company be keeps is equal to the pleasure of keeping his company.
