Like other European composers of his generation, Miklós Rósza, born in Hungary in 1907, found political and creative sanctuary in Hollywood, where he wrote concert music and many notable film scores. These three works clearly show that he never lost his roots in his native folk music. The violin concerto, a lush, romantic piece, was written at the urging of Jascha Heifetz and is tailored to his and his instrument's strengths, with singing, soaring melodies, brilliant passage work, and a very effective cadenza. Later, Heifetz and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky asked Rósza to write a piece for them; the "Theme and Variations" is the slow movement of a longer work. It is beautifully written for both instruments; based on a Hungarian melody, the variations are wonderfully inventive and varied in mood, character, and expression. The Cello Concerto too is extremely difficult and virtuosic, often quite wild and aggressive, and full of contrasts. The orchestration is excellent throughout, but not too heavy. The performances could not be better: McDuffie and Harrell surmount all the formidable technical challenges easily, their tone shimmers and glows, and their heartfelt but always refined expressiveness brings out the best in these unjustly neglected works.

Review by Edith Eisler

This is the third version to have come my way in the last few years of the dashingly eloquent Cello Concerto that Miklos Rozsa completed in 1968 for Janos Starker, and I can report straight away that it's also the strongest. Not only is Telarc's engineering incomparably more vivid and realistic than that of its predecessors, the actual performance is the most irreproachably stylish and urgently impassioned of the bunch. Lynn Harrell brings all his commanding presence, customary swagger and cast-iron technique to Rozsa's strikingly idiomatic solo writing. Add to the mix a polished and enthusiastic response from the Atlanta Symphony under Yoel Levi's eagle-eyed direction, and the results are exhilarating.

Written in 1953-54 for Jascha Heifetz, the irresistibly colourful and sublimely lyrical Violin Concerto remains perhaps the most popular of all Rozsa's 'serious' compositions. Of course, Heifetz's inimitable 1956 recording surely enshrines one of the most treasurable specimens of his jaw-dropping virtuosity. None the less, this newcomer possesses many sterling strengths of its own. Robert McDuffie makes a dauntingly accurate, sweet-toned soloist, producing the most radiant sonorities in the ravishing, Kodaly-esque slow movement, while Levi and his Atlanta band once again prove model partners.

Last but not least, McDuffie joins forces with Harrell for the engaging and eventful Tema con variazioni which originally began life as the centrepiece of the Op 29 Sinfonia concertante Rozsa penned in 1958 for Heifetz and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky. Again, the performance is utterly sympathetic and stands up perfectly well to that legendary 1963 Heifetz/Piatigorsky collaboration. All in all, a hugely rewarding triptych.'

Review by Andrew Achenbach, Gramophone

What a treat to have two colorful concertos by Miklós Rózsa on the same CD, captured in state-of-the art sound! Robert McDuffie plays the rhapsodic violin concerto with great passion. His performance is more expansive than that of Jascha Heifetz, but doesn’t suffer for that. In fact, it gives him a little more time to savor some of the more lyrical passages. Lynn Harrell is right on the mark throughout the craggier cello concerto; musical pyrotechnics seem the order of the day, but never at the expense of the music. Both soloists are featured in the Theme and Variations, a performance that seems slightly under-rehearsed and less intense than either of the solo concertos. It often happens that an orchestra’s members play their best when accompanying virtuoso soloists, and that seems to be the case here. The Atlanta Symphony, already a world-class orchestra, really was on its toes during these sessions. Conductor Yoel Levi, though, is a little mushy about some of the more energetic passages; they could use more incisive attack and bite. The recording is what we have come to expect from Telarc in Atlanta: excellent.
