Lodewijk (Lo) van Gorp is a seasoned and seasoned musician (vocals, sax, arrangements) from Leiden. For years he was in Marco Borsato 's band , collaborated with, among others, Al Jarreau, Oleta Adams, Ladies of Soul and the Metropole Orchestra , appeared in dozens of TV programs in backing choirs and appeared on hundreds of stages. Van Gorp played as a session musician on a large number of CDs and was lead singer in The Princess Project .
Lo says about this on his website: “It is a versatile project in which influences from different music movements can be recognized. Pop, jazz and classical music, fused together into a sometimes fairytale-like storybook, which resulted in the album 'Storybook'.”
In music, Steely Dan is one of his greatest loves. Since 2015, he has been playing this notoriously difficult repertoire with The Royal Dutch Scam in Dutch theaters. The musicians in this band master the musical idiom of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker to perfection. By the way, without giving the songs a soulless replay. In their performance of Steely Dan's music, the musicians find and make room for personal coloring with audible and visible pleasure.
True Friends
On 'True Friends' Lo and his musical buddies continue. With their knowledge of and love for the music of Steely Dan and related artists such as Loggins & Messina, Hall & Oates (sometimes somewhat bad -dining 'Yacht-rock' ) they have created and recorded a dozen of their own compositions over a period of almost ten years. . In 2021 the album 'True Friends' was released in Japan and now in the rest of the world.
From the first notes of the first track ( Fisher King ) the music sounds pleasantly familiar and yet new. Because the songs on 'True Friends' are all own compositions, written by Van Gorp, but also by fellow musicians Paddy van Rijswijk (bass), Patrick Drabe (guitar), Eric van de Bovenkamp (keyboards) and Arnold van Dongen. (guitar).
Title track True Friends is written by keyboardist Karel Boehlee and singer Simone Pormes and shows what Van Gorp and the band can do with such an intense and personal song. You 're All I Need and Turn the Tide are also written by Pormes and Boehlee, who also play the piano on these pieces. The complete line-up that can be heard on the album can be found at the end of this text.
'Steely Dan-esque' is an ugly word, but that flag does cover the musical charge of this beautiful, skillfully and lovingly made music. That goes for almost all the sounds on the album.
First of all, there is the voice of Lo van Gorp. The timbre of this and his unique way of singing means that Van Gorp's singing is completely unique and extremely recognizable and fits perfectly with the music on the album. Together with the keyboard parts, the guitar sound, the arrangements and the backing vocals of Dri3man ( Ferry van Leeuwen, Nick Bult, Lo ), the sound and structure of Steely Dan comes to life in a new, completely unique variant. Without Lo and his True Friends turning into musical clones. It's not for nothing that 'own songs' are called 'originals' in English. Incidentally, there are of course more influences than those of Donald Fagan and Walter Becker to be heard on True Friends' . This is how Lo wrote and sang In Another Timewith soul legend Leon Ware , who passed away in 2017 .
The music on 'True Friends' is smoothly swinging and extremely well cared for. Easy to listen to, a combination of intelligent pop with interesting jazzy influences. In short: tasteful, not average and yet accessible. Listen and judge for yourself…
Lyrics
Most texts are also interesting, for two reasons: firstly, because the lyrics are well composed linguistically (grammar and pronunciation). Secondly, because a number of texts are less concrete, so not 'just' about love, but are more imaginative. Sometimes it sounds a bit chic, sometimes it sounds a bit 'fantasy'. Fisher King and Kingdom Chill are examples of this. So no average lyrics.
Personal note
Although it is not for a reviewer to make personal confessions, I have two things to say.
First of all: in my opinion some songs could have been longer. Nice and long drawn out with many bridges, changes of bar, and breaks. Actually, as is often the case with Steely Dan. Home , for example, is picking up steam, Patrick Drabe has played a short guitar solo and then it suddenly ends. The solo could have been longer, maybe a bit of a double guitar solo and then a nice long outro. Unfortunately!
At 4'10” there is a standing end. Nice ending, yes, but premature, for my taste. My other caveat is about the lyrics of Right to Be Wrong . The fragile lyrics lead to the softly sung question whether there might be a 'Right to Be Wrong' . How fragile do you want it to be? Chapeau, Lo & True Friends.
