Joseph Haydn – Il Mondo Della Luna (1977)

Il mondo della luna (The World in the Moon), Hob. 28/7, is an opera buffa by Joseph Haydn with a libretto by Carlo Goldoni, first performed at Eszterháza, Hungary on 3 August 1777. It was first written for the composer Baldassarre Galuppi and performed in Venice in the Carnival 1750, then adapted for Haydn's version of the opera for the wedding celebrations of Count Nikolaus Esterházy, the younger son of Haydn's patron, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy. Goldoni's libretto had previously been set by four other composers. It is sometimes known by its German title Die Welt auf dem Monde. The overture was later used as the first movement to Haydn's own Symphony No. 63. The opera is scored for two oboes, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, timpani, strings, continuo. Haydn composed music to replace arias he disliked or which his singers found difficult. There were several for his mistress Luigia Polezzi, who was more noted for her vivacity than for her vocal range. In all, 21 "substitute" arias are known to be by Haydn, 22 more may be, and 23 other arias bear traces of having been partly written by him. The six on this recording are all opera buffa arias in which the singer bewails her lot in the world of ceceitful men, occasionally drawing the cynical and pratical conclusions which we have heard most memorably from Mozart's Despina.
