The most important, previously unreleased, John Williams score finally comes to CD, and it only took 34 years! Here it is … John Williams' 1976 score for Alfred Hitchcock's final film - Family Plot. Only the film's spirited End Title has ever been released previously. At long last, the entire magical, mischievous and macabre score is available. Family Plot is a very important score for Williams in that it established a certain approach and tone of writing that he would further explore in such diverse later scores as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Home Alone, The Witches of Eastwick and Harry Potter, among others.

This limited edition of 5,000 copies from Varese Sarabande of the original motion picture soundtrack of Alfred Hitchcock's 1976 final feature film, "Family Plot" is composed and conducted by John Williams ("Jaws"). To me, a long-time Hitchcock fan, this soundtrack rates nearly as much as his controversial score for his 1964 opus, "Torn Curtain," the one used in the film by John Addison that contains now after repeated viewings and listenings to its soundtrack, a "song" of sorts, the thing he quarreled with Bernard Herrmann (who also has his original unused score for the film available on the market) who refused to, in my mind, bookend a song like "Que Sera, Sera" for Julie Andrews that he did so well for Doris Day. Julie Andrews, we know, changed her "image" with that film anyway, sleeping out of wedlock with fiance, Paul Newman. As a bonus on this "Family Plot" soundtrack is a "Family Plot Theme" that is sort of Top Forty, as well as the muzak playing on the radio by the hip tombstone carving teenagers in the film. I have looked for the "Family Plot" soundtrack for years as the main melody has always intrigued me, the one running throughout the film played on a harpsichord. The choral "seance" piece of the opening credits is also good to have. It is very interesting to hear Williams's use of choral voices, electronic organ, harpsichord, etc. so effectively to tell this story of the occult, a fake medium, kidnappers, diamonds and the overall thread of fate and its ironies in a macabre suspense comedy, humor not since 1955's "The Trouble with Harry" has Hitchcock allowed himself to tell. A special treat.

This title has been on my list for years - one of about two John Williams scores not yet in my CD collection. It's good to see this become available, for the very first time in its entirety. I was worried, though, reading the liner notes. The producers could only find the source material used to master the mono soundtrack for the movie. Happily, it was a 3-track mono source, and the remastering is quite remarkable, producing decent stereo sound. No, it's not what you typically experience from Varese Sarabande, but more than listenable.

All this being said, as it turns out, this isn't essential John Williams. As is often the case, much of it is the same couple of themes recycled over and over, differently orchestrated upon each reappearance. The score does incorporate the use of what sounds like an electronic organ for many of the themes, which gets very old very fast.

To sum up, it is great to have one of the missing links in the Williams soundtrack discography. Too bad about the steep price, though. All in all, not quite worth it.
