Seux génies du baroque italien à la filiation évidente et dont la musique emplit églises, palais et théâtres du Royaume napolitain au début du XVIIIè siècle sont ici réunis : Alessandro Scarlatti (1660 – 1725) et Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710 – 1736).
Sont mises en miroir deux œuvres majeures de musique sacrée pour voix solistes, cordes et basse continue, dédiées à la Vierge. Le Salve Regina de Scarlatti où Marie est en majesté et le Stabat Mater de Pergolesi, toute en douleur au pied de la Croix.
Jean-Marc Andrieu choisit une version rarissime, à l’orchestre réduit à un par partie (sept musiciens), formant un précieux écrin aux voix remarquables de la soprano Magali Léger et de l’alto Paulin Bündgen dont les timbres se marient en un grand raffinement. Ce parti-pris du directeur musical des Passions exige de chacun une précision immaculée qui offre une écoute d’une densité et d’une émotion particulières.
Un interlude instrumental inédit de Scarlatti lie ces deux antiennes : la ravissante deuxième Sinfonia a 4, senza cembalo, al tavolino, restituée par Jean-Marc Andrieu, interprétée par le quatuor à cordes des Passions.
