The booklet flags the “impressive similarity” between Giuseppe Gazzaniga’s Don Giovanni, premiered in February 1787, and Mozart’s masterpiece first heard in Prague later the same year. True, there are occasional superficial musical resemblances; and while Da Ponte despised the librettist Giovanni Bertati as a “dramatic cobbler”, he was happy to appropriate many of his ideas for his own Don Giovanni libretto. What strikes you time and again, though, is the fathomless gulf between Gazzaniga’s casually structured one-act romp, designed as a play-within-a-play for the Venice Carnival, and Mozart’s tragi-comic masterpiece.
The atmosphere of Carnival frivolity is epitomised by the bitchy duet for Donna Elvira and the peasant girl Maturina (Mozart’s Zerlina), and the all-singing, all-dancing frolic after the Don’s distinctly un-terrifying descent to hell. There are several pleasantly spirited buffo numbers, including a duet for Pasquariello (the Leporello character) and Elvira, at the point where in Mozart Leporello sings his Catalogue aria, and the jolly Spanish-flavoured music that introduces the peasant couple. Elvira’s second aria, with cello obbligato, has a touching dignity. Au fond, though, Gazzaniga’s characterisation is stereotyped, his instrumental textures thin (just what the Venetians expected in 1787), his harmonies limited and predictable. But for the story, no one would think of reviving this Don Giovanni today. (Richard Wigmore)
