As an improviser of unsurpassed lyricism and technique Fred Hersch is at his most intimate and revealing in a solo setting. With 'Solo', the pianist kicks off a creatively fecund yearlong celebration of his 60th birthday with a definitive statement of his solo artistry. In many ways, 'Solo' distills the essence of Hersch's pianistic expression. Recorded in a jewel-like Catskills church at the 2014 Windham Chamber Music Festival, the set evolves with a compelling internal emotional logic all its own, flowing through Hersch's familiar solo touchstones (Jobim, Ellingtonia, Monk, originals) that turn into vessels for his supremely graceful invention. His 10th solo recording, 'Solo' joins an illustrious collection of albums that started with his riveting 1994 addition to Concord Jazz's Live at Maybeck series.

Pianist Fred Hersch is celebrating his sixtieth birthday year in style, with a week of performances at the legendary Village Vanguard, his debuts at the Newport Jazz Festival and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the release of Fred Hersch Solo. The achievement of surviving six decades is noteworthy, poignant and auspicious considering Hersch's near-communion with death in 2008, when he was placed in a medically-induced coma for 40 days as part of a fight against HIV-induced dementia. But Hersch survived, and has come back with an artistic zest, releasing since that medical crisis six excellent sets, in trio, duo or solo .

Fred Hersch Solo is as graceful and beautiful set as any he has done since his recovery, a post 2008 discography that begins with Fred Hersch Plays Jobim (Palmetto, 2009), and rolls through to 2014's Floating (Palmetto), and visits in between one of his finest trio outings, Whirl (Palmetto, 2010).

Fred Hersch Solo is a set that puts the pianist's technical expertise front and center. His is an approach rich in emotion, with a nimble delicacy of touch. The set opens with a floating medley of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Olha Maria" and "O Grand Amour," a Brazilian journey that drifts in the beginning then gains strength and sense of urgency. Hersch takes the familiar "Caravan" into quirky and unfamiliar territory, and lays down a gorgeously stately homage to Robert Schumann on "Pastorale." Thelonious Monk's "In Walked Bud" is an ebullient romp, and Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" sounds as if it drifted up out of a prayer book.

The "sound" of the music, recorded in a Catskills church, is warm and resonant, with a reverential tint, and Hersch, with now ten solo recordings in his discography, is in splendid form. Another jewel of a post-coma recording Fred Hersch.

Review by Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz

Fred Hersch, the American one-man piano orchestra, is 60 this month. Prominent in the celebrations of the master who can suggest Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau (a former pupil) rolled together, is the release of this solo album, recorded live in a Catskills church, and interpreting classics including Caravan, Thelonious Monk’s In Walked Bud and Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now, as well as a sumptuous original dedication to Schumann and an impassioned waltz that never stops living up to its title of Whirl. Hersch is a traditionalist melodically and rhythmically (he rarely plays funk, or sacrifices rich embroidery for modern minimalism), but he sounds contemporary because he’s an improviser, and because his heart’s so exuberantly in his work. Dazzling counterpoint peppers Jobim’s Olha Maria and O Grande Amor, Caravan’s melody is picked out in light, dancing-on-tiptoe touches, In Walked Bud combines Monk’s lurching stomp with swing-piano amiability and razor-sharp precision, and an exquisite, quietly transported, and eventually uplifting account of Both Sides Now is one of the great versions of the song. Happy birthday, Mr Criminally Underrated Hersch.
