First recordings of two powerful works from the pen of one of our major composers, John McCabe, who is celebrating his sixtieth birthday this year. Of Time and the River (the title is taken from Thomas Wolfe's novel) is actually the published title of McCabe's Fourth Symphony, written in 1993/4 to a commission by the BBC. The Flute Concerto was written for James Galway in 1989/90 and he gave the first performance of it in 1990 with Michael Tilson Thomas and the London Symphony Orchestra who commissioned the work. Here it is played by the outstanding young flautist Emily Beynon in her first recording for Hyperion.

John McCabe's music is finally receiving the recognition it deserves and this splendid new recording confirms the status of one of Britain'' finest symphonists. The Fourth, ''Of Time and the River'' is very kaleidoscopic with some wonderful flashing moments of inspiration held together by some real splendid orchestral patches that recall Simpson in their recreation of musical blocks of symphonic thought. This is a one-movement work that although including modernist tendencies is quite accessible, not least after reading Guy Rickard's impeccable dissertation in the accompanying booklet.

McCabe provides markings for six movements, which include a magnificently sinister Allegro deciso, and a complex Mesto where the sounds of power are quelled in a peaceful coda of almost disarming beauty. Handley's interpretation is well-nigh unsurpassable, he is completely at one with the music bringing an almost Tippett-like intensity to the proceedings and the BBC orchestra provides some marvelous playing from first note to last. The Flute Concerto is permeated with the same intensity and sense of commitment, in a way it is more episodic than the symphony.

The spirit of the performance by Emily Beynon is almost Galway like in spirit; its dedicatee has indeed given this work proper exposure. The three distinct movements are played without a break and the same spine-tingling mechanisms inform the strangely original landscape. Virtuosity and power are matched by both artists especially in the concluding Andante where a sense of calm and resignation is so moving. This is indeed a committed and highly commendable performance throughout. Hyperion's recording is superb with a believable soundstage and a spectrum that catches all the nuances of the music with outstanding clarity. I would recommend this disc to Simpson devotees and for a dip into the music of one of Britain's outstanding living composers.

Review by Gerald Fenech, MusicWeb-International

Though John McCabe’s 1994 Symphony No. 4, subtitled “Of Time and the River”, is in two movements, it’s made up of five sections that flow from one to the next. The music is similar in style to Michael Tippett’s, particularly his Symphony No. 4, with its presentation of seemingly disparate episodes that return throughout the work, giving it a sense of motivic, if not thematic unity. However, McCabe’s musical ideas, despite their austerity, don’t ring with the same explosive originality and audacity inherent in those of Tippett–who after all was a singular genius at that sort of thing. Rather, the piece has an arid quality reminiscent of the compositions of Nicolas Maw.

The Flute Concerto (1989) is another matter entirely. Here the materials are brightly lit and highly colored. The work’s tension-filled opening (with wonderfully pregnant pauses), leads into music of arresting variety, including an exotic middle section that contains haunted echoes of Khachaturian’s transcripted Flute Concerto. Emily Beynon tackles the challenging solo part with virtuosic flair, clearly having mastered all of McCabe’s demandingly athletic passages. Vernon Handley has both the Concerto and Symphony firmly within his grasp, and the BBC Symphony makes a strong case for both works. With Hyperion’s demonstration-class sound, this becomes a disc well worth investigating.
