Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver have been carving out their legendary status in the bluegrass genre for nearly 4 decades with the high standards to always deliver stellar vocals and top-notch instrumentation on each of their songs.
Lawson was honored with an induction into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2012, and his accolades include nearly 20 IBMA awards, including 7 for Gospel Performance of the Year.
While his albums are always met with high praise from the bluegrass community, his new gospel release Burden Bearer might be his most highly anticipated yet as he’s answered the call of his fans who were wanting more a cappella from his next album of this type.
Laid out like a traditional revival, Burden Bearer is an album that needs to be listened to in order to understand the full feel of it as it reaches out to the non-believer in an effort to inspire them to give their life to Christ by offering doses of what hope, faith, and overcoming struggles with God by your side looks like.
Opening the album with its title track, Lawson gives the listener a bluegrass invitation to lay your troubles down at the foot of the cross.
In the familiar traditional bluegrass style that we’ve come to expect from Lawson, he offers up songs such as “Another Day.”
However, it’s when he fuses in a cappella with “Brother Have You Heard,” “He’ll Care For You,” and “Rejoicing All The Way,” that Lawson defines the depth and soul of the songs while allowing the pristine vocals to shine as a signature of what defines the album as a whole.
Similar to the title track opener, the midway point of the album calls us to put our trust in God by offering our life to Him on “Get Right With God,” setting the second half of the album in motion.
Whereas the first half can be summed up as reaching out for those that haven’t yet given their life to Christ, the second half is the rejoicing in the moments after they have.
“Passed All Sorrow” introduces them to what their life has become through their choice to surrender it.
“By the Marks In His Hands” is a reminder that God will never leave our side.
“Sailing On The Waves of Glory,” an a cappella offering rejuvenates us in the fact that we are now saved and rejoices in the knowing that we are heaven bound.
By the time that we finish up the album with “How Great Thou Art,” those that needed to surrender will have, those that already have will be reaffirming their faith, and all believers will come together as one body to praise Him as they sing-a-long.
