Blues, Jump Blues
What "Jump Blues" really is?: There is a basic beat that has always touched our souls and is epitomized by Jump Blues. We all know about it, believe it or not. Jump Blues is a great version of up-tempo blues music characterized by a jazzy saxophone (or brass instruments) sound, driving rhythms and shouted, earthy, highly syncopated vocals. Many times it contains comedic lyrics on contemporary urban themes. Jump blues contains all of the elements that were the precursors of Rock & Roll.
Jump Blues first appeared in the late 1930s, and was enormously popular in the Forties and early Fifties performed by artists such as Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner and George "Harmonica" Smith. Prior to being tagged as "Jump Blues", this form of music was known as "Blues and Rhythm", then "Rhythm and Blues" and was the bridge between older styles of Blues, and the Big Band sound of the Forties. If your interest has been peaked, sit back and let us hip you to more of the history of Jump Blues.
Through his music, Bill Stuve carries on this fine tradition. This is readily apparent on his three albums, Flyin' Right, Say Man and Big Noise. All of us have been touched by the rhythm of this unique art form and Bill shows his love and talent for it in his work. This site features his CDs and is a celebration of his efforts. Along with his solo recordings, and a extensive "Rod Piazza & the Mighty Flyers" catalog. Bill has shared the stage and recorded with many of the "Who's Who" of the Blues. Some of these recordings are either out of print or have been repackaged in a variety of new and exciting packages. So you might have to do a bit of homework.
Please feel free to take a look at the Bill Stuve page. It's a useful place to start when searching for these fine Blues artists and their music. Bill would like to acknowledge and thank all of the great artists, living and passed, that have enriched his life by sharing their knowledge and presence. Many times he thinks back fondly to a moment, or comment, that has stayed with him and helped in his development as a musician.

After 20 years as the bass player for one of America's hardest working blues organizations (The Mighty Flyers) Bill Stuve needs little in the way of an introduction to followers of that musical genre. Stuve's unique "Dog House" String Bass Style has been on display in thousands of venues throughout America and the world. From smokey jazz clubs in every corner of the globe to world class appearances at the European sites like The North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland). The Stockholm (Sweden) Jazz Festival, The Belgium Rhythm & Blues Festival (Peer, Belgium), as well as major venues in Japan and Australia.
At home in the states, Bill has used the hectic touring schedule of the Mighty Flyers (Mention a blues club, blues concert or festival, and The Flyers have played it) to fine-tune his musical skills as a player, singer and songwriter. In 1990 he formed his own Upright/Allnight Productions and recorded his first solo album "Big Noise" (Tramp TRCD 9906).
Six years later, Stuve's “Say Man!” is a package of 14 jump and R&B tunes (five of which are Stuve originals). This album has an all star line up of west coast blues favorites including fellow Flyer Rick (L.A. Holmes) Holmstrom (guitar), along with appearances by harmonica ace Johnny Dyer sax players Big Jay McNeely, Jeff Turmes, Louis Taylor and Dave Moody, along with guitarist Joel Foy, and drummers Richard Innes and Jimi Bott. The vocals, string bass, and executive production chores were taken care of by Stuve himself along with producer Eddie Reed. The entire project was recorded in the “Live in the studio style of the early Chess and Sun Records” days. While he has no intention of giving up his “Day Job” with The Mighty Flyers, with “Say Man!”, Stuve has stepped back in the “Solo” spotlight for another minute or two.
An out of sight contribution from the West Coast, sure to get some bodies out there movin’ .

Bill Stuve - Flyin' Right - 2005

Bill Stuve: 2 Albums

Audio CD (September 26, 2000) - Original Release Date: September 26, 2000 - Number of Discs: 1 - Label: Upright/Allnight Productions - Catalogue: UACD 1005

After spending more than three decades as the bass player for Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers, Bill Stuve is currently concentrating more on his solo career. His third release, “Flyin’ Right”, makes you feel like putting on your dancing shoes and heading to your favorite swing club. Not only is Stuve one of the best bassists out there, his style and absolute command of the bass make him a crowd favorite. The first time I saw Bill was w/ Rod and the Flyers about five years ago. I recall being amazed that such a cool looking instrument (the big, fat upright bass) could make so many awesome and thunderous sounds! Stuve has also worked w/ many blues legends over the years including Jimmy Rogers, William Clarke, and Junior Watson. His other solo releases, “Big Noise” and “Say Man” also offer to the listener that authentic jump blues sound that will keep you interested and wanting more from beginning to end. Bill also offers fine vocals and enthusiasm to back up his expert bass thumpin’. Below is a track listing of his latest release:

1. Honey Bee - high energy
2. Jumpin! - groovin’ and swingin’
3. Lookout! - finger pickin’ and story tellin’
4. Bad Luck and Trouble - fabulous guitar playing by Piazza bandmate
5. Leave That Boogie To Me - jazzy and swingin’
6. Enuff Is Enuff - horns and hand clapping!
7. All These Blues - steady rolling w/ a catchy riff
8. Jump Children - boggie piano with a cool ending
9. Someday - one of my favorites of all time-a blues classic!
10. Too Late For Tears - slow blues and poundin’ bass
11. Conjured - love that old style sound
12. Spin & Win - Motown style

I was dancin’ in my chair listening to this one! I give this cd a 4.25 of 5 on the STLBluesometer! Stuve might be takin’ a break w/ Rod and the Mighty Flyers, but he isn’t cooling off or slowing down anytime soon! Be sure to check him and his merchandise out at www.stuve.com for more high flyin’ action! ~ By Shannon (stlblues.net)
