Though there are many recordings of the popular Symphony No. 7: 'Leningrad' (for good reason, as this is one of the finest of Shostakovich's glowing works), the catalogue listing for recordings of the Symphony No. 12: The Year 1917 is less lengthy. This would probably come as no surprise to Shostakovich himself, as this particular work represented inner conflicts in his own view of his homeland political milieu, views more nebulous on the surface but suggested in the context.
Haitink and the London Philharmonic Orchestra give a full-blooded performance of the 7th Symphony. Though there are other versions perhaps more electrifying and sonically sound than this one, for a good, solid, edgy performance this one is among the best.
Where Haitink shines - this time with the radiant Concertgebouw Orchestra - is in the Symphony No. 12. This work represents years of thinking and reacting to a challenge facing Shostakovich to come up with a tribute to Lenin: he avoided any one-on-one tribute by instead focusing on the October Rebellion of 1917 and the hopes (if later thwarted) of the new world promised by communism. The work is in four contiguous movements and while there are only two or three melodic lines explored, the orchestration is lush and richly evocative. Shostakovich's soaring and pizzting celli, basses, and higher strings are punctuated by gleaming solo work from bassoon, clarinet, flute, trombone, French horn and tympani. While the overall effect of this work does not have the intellectual or philosophical power of his great symphonies, it is a work too seldom performed. Haitink gives a lush reading that plays up the beauties of the music - if not the psychological puns hidden beneath this cinematic work.
