The best of that rather extraordinary body of music written, often hurriedly, to meet the ephemeral needs of the American entertainment industry between the two world wars has proved durable beyond all expectation. Each of the songs on the present recording is characterised by melodic originality of a most personal kind. George Gershwin’s idiom was tinged from the beginning with jazz and the blues, and this had an effect on his rhythm and harmony, both of which still possess much piquancy.
In most cases the lyrics are by the composer’s brother, Ira, and they are almost equally accomplished, matching the extremely varied moods of the music well. Just occasionally he uses a standard verbal “romantic” cliché from the popular songs of that time, but this is always done with just sufficient irony, so that the quotation marks round it are, so to speak, fully audible. We should not be surprised, then, that artists from quite other areas of music have in recent years been attracted to material of this sort.
Naturally, these songs’ fusion of two sorts of elegantly disciplined, sometimes inspired, craftsmanship puts considerable demands on performers, and this recital makes an un- usually vital and imaginative response. It may be taken as a continuation of earlier successful ventures, for Barbara Hendricks has sung ina fine recording of Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” while Katia and Marielle Labéque have behind them a dazzling recording of two-piano versions of George’s Piano Concerto and “Rhapsody in Blue.” The fourth participant is Francois Jeanneau, a well-known French jazz arranger, composer, and tenor saxophonist, who wrote keyboard parts whose luxuriance takes them to the level of exuberant commentaries on the original texts.
