Astor Piazzolla's cerebral yet lusty take on tango was probably a direct result of his family having moved from Argentina to New York when he was only three years old. While he was growing up in Little Italy, his father presented him with a second-hand bandoneon (a type of squeezebox), which he mastered in record time. While wandering around the city, the boy fed his voracious musical appetites by sneaking into Harlem jazz clubs to hear Duke Ellington and studying works by classical composers like Mozart, Bach, and Chopin. He also met Carlos Gardel, the most important tango singer of all time. The boy got to sit in with Gardel's orchestra and the master wanted to take him on tour, but Piazzolla's parents felt that he was too young to leave home. Upon his return to his homeland some years later, Piazzolla continued to hone his personal sound, sometimes going so far beyond his more traditionally oriented contemporaries that he was derided as "the assassin of the tango." However, as time went on, he composed well-received works for small combos, Broadway shows, film soundtracks, and classical venues. His stylistic innovations were gradually accepted until he was not only acknowledged as the world's greatest tango player but hugely popular with world music, jazz, and classical fans. The tunes gathered on this collection were mostly recorded toward the end of Piazzolla's career and provide an accurate picture of his more straight-ahead live performances. Several of his signature compositions are heard, including such standouts as "Adios Nonino" (a tribute to his father), "Tristeza," and "Vuelvo Al Sur.".
