A remarkably intimate recording of Schumann's Cello Concerto in A minor, this performance by Anne Gastinel and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège, directed by Louis Langrée, may be a little too forward for the average listener's comfort. Direct Stream Digital engineering places Gastinel front and center – almost in one's living room – and the orchestra is not far behind. Such "living presence" may be an audiophile's delight, but others may find the proximity disconcerting, especially because Gastinel's bowing seems overly resinous up close. However, this is the only complaint worth making about this disc, for Gastinel is wonderfully expressive and the orchestra is extraordinarily balanced and clear in its timbres, no mean achievement in Schumann's problematic, thick orchestration. The remaining performances are less forwardly recorded and sound pleasant and natural, with a fresh spontaneity that feels more like a recital than a studio session. Gastinel is joined by pianist Claire Désert in the Fantasiestücke, Op. 73; Stücke im Volkston (5), Op. 102; and the Adagio and Allegro in A flat major, Op. 70, and the two musicians are fully engaged and dynamic in these performances. Though DSD picks up a few extraneous noises, these are not enough to distract from the music, which is richly rewarding.

Review by Blair Sanderson, Allmusic.com

Though not a newcomer to the British catalogue, Anne Gastinel is less known here than in her native France, where, after training at the Lyons and Paris Conservatoires, she won enviable awards throughout the 1990s. All this can be found in the elegantly spacious Naïve booklet, which even includes the name of every orchestral player as well as a somewhat self-indulgently soul-baring account by Gastinel herself of her special feeling for the main work, Schumann's Cello Concerto, completed shortly after he assumed conductorship of the DUsseldorf Orchestra only four years before his final breakdown.

She certainly makes every note sensitively and intimately her own in the two nostalgically beautiful opening movements, though just occasionally in the first I wondered if pursuit of detail slightly militates against the larger sweep of the whole. An overworked rhythmic motif in the finale (as several times before in Schumann's output) poses bigger problems in holding attention throughout. But here the highly spirited Liege orchestra under Louis Langree weigh in with near military alacrity to ensure a triumphant major-key home-coming.

For me, the disc's extra-special delight comes at the end, in the miniatures Schumann wrote in Dresden (shortly before moving to Dusseldorf) for a variety of solo instruments with piano. Though only the Fiinf Stiicke im Volkston were specifically designed for the cello, Schumann named it as a legitimate alternative in the Phantasiestiicke for clarinet and the Adagio and Allegro for horn. With Claire Desert as an outstandingly closely-attuned partner, Gastinel's vividly imaginative, spontaneous-sounding characterisation made me realise, more than ever before, what precious little gems they all are.
