Nelson DeMille is one of my favorite authors, so I really looked forward to his new book. Sadly, it is not one of his best. The characters are boring and sad imitations of what the author most likely envisioned for "soldiers of fortune." Parts of the book are extremely gruesome and sad, and while the history of Ethiopia is no doubt true and tragic about what happened during its civil war, the "quest," itself is an endless tale of hiking through terrain to find the black monastery and the cup (chalice) from which Jesus drank at the Last Supper.
The history channel has alluded to the idea that the Arc of the Covenant apparently rests in a church in Ethiopia, and closely guarded against outsiders, but to my knowledge the chalice has disappeared into the mists of history.
