Jedná se o původní dílo, které čtenářsky atraktivní formou podchycuje válečný konflikt z dob sovětské intervence v Afghánistánu. Publikace je koncipována jako ucelený pohled na tuto problematiku od samotného začátku války (1979), až do úplného stažení jednotek v roce 1989.
Publikace vychází z doposud nezveřejněných autentických zahraničních pramenů, které kvůli předchozímu informačnímu vakuu nebyly zpřístupněny. Tyto materiály po teroristických útocích z 11. září 2001 vnáší zcela nový pohled na dění a historii v Afghánistánu, čímž afghánská problematika dostává jinou dimenzi. V práci jsou uvedeny konkrétní počty a údaje o nasazených jednotkách, způsobu a zvláštnosti vedení boje s mudžáhedíny, specifice terénu, používané vojenské technice a další faktografické údaje.
