Most of the research and writing for this book was done during an eighteen-month stay in Spain in 1961 and 1962, and during whatever time I could spare from my teaching duties at Wayne State and Columbia universities in the years 1963 to 1965. I did some additional research in the United States in the summer of 1966 and spent the winter of 1967-68 grappling, often vainly, for solutions to a few especially difficult problems that troubled me. I am fairly well satisfied with the book as it now stands, although I wish that I could have learned more about the dynamics of peasant protest and fear that in some instances I may have been insufficiently generous in interpreting the exceedingly complex position of the Anarchosyndicalists and Socialists.
