Ian Heath "Armies and enemies of the crusades, 1096-1291: Organization, tactics, dress and weapons"

Although many books have been written on the Crusades over the years they mostly approach the subject from a political or social viewpoint, and with the exception of R.C. Smail's workmanlike 'Crusading Warfare 1097-1193' few or none have ventured to describe in any detail the warriors and armies with which Moslem and Christian vied for control of the Holy Land. The aim of this book, therefore, is to fill this gap and add a little flesh to the bones of crusading history, but not only describing but also illustrating the myriad warrior-types of Outremer and the lands of Islam and Byzantium, so that together with the notes on organisation and tactics an entire picture can be built up of warfare in the Middle East in the two centuries between the fateful Battle of Manzikert in 1071 and the fall of the city of Acre to the Mamluks 220 years later.
