The need for uniform and precise colour measurement and communication arose in the early 21st Century. Apparently, this is when the first instrument for measuring the reflectance colour values was introduced. However, the price and skill required to operate colour measurement instruments have limited the application in various science laboratories and industry sectors until recently. The continual technological advancements made in the electronics sector since the last half-century have made a significant impact on the production, cost, accuracy and size of colour measurement instruments.
This study is an initial attempt to investigate the relationship between smartphones and tristimulus colourimetry instruments. This investigation aims to assess a smartphone’s similar and supplementary features competence towards supporting tristimulus colourimetry functionalities, which is the precise measurement of tristimulus colour values of objects in a similar manner to which human beings perceive colour.
