Growing Up: A Cross-Cultural Encyclopedia

A discussion of those aspects of various cultures that cause children to be different?or alike?and of how cultural influences affect their personalities and behaviors. Broude examines, compares, and contrasts nearly 100 practices and beliefs related to pregnancy, childbirth, and child rearing among approximately 100 cultures and/or peoples from around the world. The topics, presented alphabetically in articles ranging from one to several pages, include adolescence, adoption, activities, cleanliness, social development, fathers and mothers, friendship, illness, initiation rites, language acquisition, learning, moral development, naming, peers, responsibility, sex differences, sibling rivalry, toilet training, weaning, and more. Written in a clear style, the articles discuss the topics not only in terms of cultural differences, but also in terms of similarities across cultures. Longer articles are divided into sections with bold headings for easier access to the information, and each article is followed by a bibliography. An extensive bibliography is provided at the end of the book, as is a comprehensive index. Black-and-white photographs appear throughout and culture-location maps at the beginning of the text are also included.
