It is truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.

So begins Jane Austen's delightfully ironic Pride and Prejudice, a novel that focuses on marriage and money. Jane Bennet, lovely and reserved, Mr. Bingley, charming but easily swayed—will love bring them together or will pride and deceit bar the door to their happiness? Elizabeth Bennet, spirited and quick to judge: who will win her hand—the proud and disdainful Mr. Darcy, the earnest and ridiculous Mr. Collins, or the charming and rakish Mr. Wickham? This complete study edition of Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice includes history and information about the society of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century England, a map, illustrations, questions, writing ideas, and projects to help you as you explore this story in which arrogance, bias, and conceit derail engagements and fragment general happiness.

About the author: Jane Austen
Jane Austen once wrote to her niece “three or four Families in a Country Village is the very thing to work on.” Her advice should have been well received, for Austen herself had tremendous success with it. Austen, who was born in the Hampshire region of England, focused on the families of the gentry. Her novels portray characters of superior understanding or great folly who operate within a highly structured social world in which wealth, rank, and prestige are highly valued.
