This frankly hilarious as well as philosophical story follows Candide and his tutor Pangloss, as they journey the earth following the mantra: ‘All is for the best in this, the best of all possible worlds’.

This adage, however, is disproved at many turns, with the characters encountering many forms of opposition to their outlook. Candide realises some of the horrors the eighteenth-century world contains, not without moments of sublime comedy, but is there any light at the end of the tunnel for the travelers?

Francois-Marie Arouet (1694-1778), known better by his pen-name Voltaire, was hailed as a genius of the ‘Enlightenment’, a philosophical and political movement which championed logical reasoning above all else.

"The brilliant unabridged narration brings out all the ironies, tragedy and exuberant comedy of this 18th-century classic" - Rachael Redford, The Observer
