In the last quarter of the nineteenth century a group of rebellious young painters abandoned the dusty models and art objects associated with the Greek and Roman myths in order to open wide the windows and look out at nature. A few years earlier they had begun to place their easels out of doors; they preferred the uncertainties of a light that was natural and alive, even though uneven, to the ideal, artificial light of the academic schools.
