In the second half of the nineteenth century a new art movement was born in France. It was derisively christened "Impressionism" by a French art critic upon seeing a painting by Claude Monet called Impression — Sunrise at a group showing of young artists in 1874. Actually the derisive name was an accurate one, and it soon lost its mocking connotation, for "impressions" were precisely what these artists were trying to convey in their paintings.
