The painter who was the object of this glowing praise from his contemporaries — Domenicos Theotocopoulos known as El Greco — was born in Crete in 1541. He studied in Venice, possibly with Titian, and later moved to Rome where he stayed until offered an important commission for Toledo in Spain. He settled there, to become, eventually, one of the greatest of Spanish painters.
