Reading Sounder (The Engaged Reader)
Pamela Loos | Chelsea House Publications (August 22, 2005) | ISBN-10: 0791088332 | 74 pages | PDF | 680 kb

This series takes young readers to the first step in literary criticism, drawing their attention to pre-reading contexts with the understanding that readers create assumptions before even opening the book.

These titles are designed to aid students in evaluating, discussing, and writing about works of literature. Each volume, meant to be read in conjunction with the book, is divided into sections covering context, plot, characterization, setting, and themes and symbols. Two On Your Own activities per chapter require students to apply critical-thinking skills and to answer thoughtful questions. Unfortunately, the criticism offered in each chapter is repetitive, so the same discussion and response are offered for theme and symbol and for characterization. Still, if an instructor or home-schooling parent wants specific assistance for teaching these novels, these books might be helpful.
