This book was conceived and birthed as part of Gaia Education and as a deepening of the Social Dimension of the Ecovillage Design Education (EDE) curriculum. Many people, including all the writers have given their energy freely, in order to support this project, because it was worth it to them.

Archaeological evidence shows that the primordial pattern for human beings is to gather together in relatively tightly knit, clan-sized groups closely aligned with nature. Today, we need consciously to reinvent cooperative and harmonious ways of living together. For people raised within the hyperindividualized paradigm, or in settings where people come from diverse or even warring factions, learning the subtleties of constructive and mutually beneficial interaction within a community setting may take a major effort.
Rebuilding human community is an endeavour whose immense challenges should not be underestimated.
