Perspective 1: An Introduction

5 hours 25 minutes 24 seconds
Beginning - Intermediate

In this first lesson of the series, artist and veteran instructor Erik Olson introduces perspective in a complete and unabridged pictorial form for artists. Erik walks you through the process of integrating compositional thumbnails and sketches with perspective all the way through to fully formal, measured perspective. You will learn how to use perspective as a tool for the artist, to serve compositional and conceptual goals. The practices and proofs that you will learn are derived from the Renaissance all the way to present day methods.

Perspective 2: Views and Measuring in 1 Point Perspective

4 hours 58 minutes 25 seconds
Beginner - Intermediate

In this video lesson, Erik Olson continues to demonstrate the process of referencing and determining scale in perspective as well as introducing set-up views and measuring in 1 point perspective. You will learn from drawings, lectures, and master paintings in order to show the critical relationship between an artist’s initial excitement over an idea and the ability to realize a resolved version of that idea.

Perspective 3: Referencing, Scene Set-Ups, and Ellipses

5 hours 58 minutes 23 seconds
Beginner - Intermediate

In the third lesson in Erik Olson’s perspective series, Erik demonstrates more complex referencing methods considering both 1 and 2 point perspective together in views. Many of the picture set-ups exhibit “in picture” methods that allow the artist to stay within the scene frame to achieve accurate diminishment. You will also learn about Camera frame behavior in relation to artistic compositional decision making, as well as the use of ellipses. These ideas are further demonstrated in a basic 3-D program walk through.

Perspective 4: Ellipses, Scene Set Ups, Multiple Figure Behavior

5 Hours 9 minutes and 32 Seconds
Beginning - Intermediate

This lecture moves forward with Erik Olson demonstrating mechanical ellipse creation as well as critically analyzing the restrictions of viewing scenes through camera frames within the cone of vision. Working from simple plans, measured images are created along with many figures variously positioned in strict 1 Point perspective in drawing form and a 3-D program walk through. Erik further creates formal views looking straight down as well as up in 1 Point perspective, and a perspective digital draw over is demonstrated over photograph.

Perspective 5: Drawing Scenes, Objects with Multiple VPs

6 hours,1 minutes, 38 seconds
Beginning to Intermediate

Erik Olson approaches this lecture with making a basic plan of an environment and then realizing two measured views of the environment. Objects are drawn behaving mostly in 1 Point perspective. Following this, drawn diagrams and multiple digital draw overs, on paintings and photographs, demonstrate 1 Point perspective views with 2 Point perspective objects present. All the information learned thus far in the 5 lectures is referred to and exhibited by Erik in the digital draw overs for fresh context of the perspective concepts and practices.

Perspective 6: Referencing & Measuring in 2 Point

6 Hours, 20 minutes, 20 Seconds
Beginning - Intermediate

In this Lecture, Erik Olson begins by discussing the concepts and content of Lectures 01-05 in the context of now having experienced and drawn with them as an artist. This Lecture then proceeds with demonstrating 2 point perspective with both “in picture methods” which are estimating foreshortened space, as well as “fully measured” perspective. These activities include the helpful use of diminishment guides for distant vanishing points and the critical explanation of how measuring points and measuring lines describe real measured flat space converted into correct foreshortened space.

Perspective 7: 2 Point Views, Measuring, & Ellipses

5 hours, 21 minutes, 39 seconds
Beginning - Intermediate

Erik Olson demonstrates additional views and scenes set ups using with “in picture” methods, which allow the artist to stay within the picture frame to set up correct perspective. Further fully measured perspective examples are created and explained as well as traditional and film camera framing. Scale referencing on uneven surfaces, such as landscape ground and exterior spaces is also demonstrated along with a digital draw over and the behavior and drawing of various ellipses and simple elliptical objects in 2 point perspective.

Perspective 8: 2 Point Ellipses, Objects & Scenes

6 hours 39 minutes 47 seconds
Beginning - Intermediate

This Lecture with Erik Olson demonstrates the behavior and drawing of multiple elliptical objects from the more simple all the way to a fully realized spiral staircase. This range of complexity is critical for the artist to understand the basic set up of an elliptical object as well as the execution of a more complex object with numerous interior references. Views looking down and looking up in 2 Point perspective are demonstrated as well as how triangular objects are set up. This Lecture concludes with a digital draw over a very odd Jan Steed painting.

Perspective 9: Sketch Views & Digital 2 Point

7 hours 26 minutes 46 seconds
Beginning - Intermediate

In this video lesson in our Artistic Perspective series Erik Olson demonstrates 2 point perspective sketch scenes as well as scale transfers of objects and figures critical to designing scenes. Erik will then create a scene that is measured to realize a view from a basic plan. Erik also takes you through a digital 3-D walk-through showcasing several 2 point perspective concepts as well as topics covered in Perspective Lessons 6 through 9.

Perspective 10: Introduction to Inclined/Declined Perspective

6 hours and 26 seconds
Beginning - Intermediate

In this Lecture, Erik Olson introduces the concepts and facts of various slopes and sloped objects with inclines and declines of various degrees. Finding the auxiliary vanishing points that these slopes lead to, as well as demonstrating estimated reference and measuring methods for slopes surfaces are covered. Determining how to size and scale objects and figures on inclines and declines is included with object building and a simple scene.

Erik Olson

Erik Olson received his BA from Art Center College of Design in 1987, freelancing in Illustration until 2001. Erik received his MFA in Painting from Wayne State University in Michigan in 2010. He has exhibited his personal paintings in various group shows including the Williamson gallery in Pasadena CA and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit MI. Erik is currently a full time associate professor at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Erik’s current work is a series of paintings that he considers portraits of late 19th century, early and mid 20th century, and 21st century homes, dwellings, and structures, as well as their surroundings in various stages of decay.
