Perhaps our favorite hot-tempered parish priest's problem is, as always, defeating Communism while still nurturing the communists whom he sees as part of his flock. Or, perhaps, it's fighting the dirty battle against Communism without fighting dirty himself–though if *this* is his goal, Don Camillo still has a long way to go to reach it! Still, when he's not asking forgiveness for his methods, he can be found diligently attending to the needs of his parishoners, from assisting the mayor in his attempt to pass the eighth grade, to investigating rumors of a town ghost. Communist Mayor Peppone is also in fine form in this book, as he must deal with a "ghost" from his own past, as well as face the wrath of his family when the Party cancels Christmas.
Once again, Guareschi charms and delights the reader with his whimsical stories.
