The polynomials whose properties and applications are discussed in this book were 'discovered' almost a century ago by the Russian mathematician Chebyshev (the spelling of which has as many variations as that of Shakespeare). Their importance for practical computation, however, was rediscovered some thirty years ago by C. Lanczos, who must be regarded as the modern 'father' of this field of numerical mathematics.
