This study is the result of a long journey of investigation in the realm of animal imagery, which grew from a master’s thesis into a large chapter in my doctoral dissertation, submitted to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2000.
From the beginning I was aware that any treatment of the figurative and symbolic function of animal imagery in biblical literature requires special attention to its contextual meaning and cultural evaluation. I chose to conduct a combined investigation that considers the zoological traits of the animal alongside its literary image in the Bible. The didactic framework of Proverbs and its impressive use of various literary patterns are essential points of reference in any analysis of the image and its rhetorical implications. Philological aspects of the relevant texts were not neglected in the search for the rhetorical implications of the image.
