This book has alas taken too long to complete. It started as a companion volume to the original book. Architecture in the Humid Tropics, and was to have been simply Architecture in the Dry Tropics, but the publishers suggested that, since the original book was now out of print and blocks destroyed, it would be better to do a combined tropical book. So much of the world is in the tropics and there is so much to be said that our difficulty has been to condense information and avoid confusing generalisations, because although most of the tropical world is underdeveloped it contains some very sophisticated places. It is, however, for those working in the developing countries that it will be most useful, those who being far from sources of information, most need guidance.
