The reef identification guides keep coming in thick and fast, and the latest is from top underwater photographer Michael Aw, so you would expect the images to provide a little more than the usual functional reference shots – a touch of art, even.
Michael doesn’t disappoint, offering no fewer than 850 photos, and because the book is well produced on good-quality paper, they look good, though of necessity most are rather small. The pages are colour-coded by category, which helps when you’re flipping through in search of a species.
Because the scope of the book takes in the denizens of the whole wide world and all its oceans, this is another guide that may well not prove particularly useful if you’re looking up anything very rare. However, its broad sweep provides a solid foundation, and means that the book is small enough to tuck into your hand luggage.
Published by Michael’s own Ocean Geographic Society in Australia, this is a very readable guide that doesn’t get too bogged down in scientific detail but has a nice light touch about the information it imparts, no doubt helped in this regard by associate editor Sara Baggott.
