The idea behind this book is to set Fuller and his films in a context which makes them more accessible to discussion. Some of the ideas considered might seem extraneous to the films and. more relevant to a book on con-temporary America. However, Fuller is so essentially an American film director that a purely cinematic approach to his films would be unprofitable. Yet, Fuller is so much a film director that too much context. and not enough criticism of the films themselves would in-evitably misrepresent his achievements.
